Dog-friendly hike: Dinosaur Hill – Big Dog Travel Blog

On a recent adventure to colorful Colorado, we found an amazing prehistoric hike near Fruita, Colorado. The craziest part about this hike was that it is a famous paleontology site known for the discovery of a Brontosaurus doggosaur in 1901. I had no idea that doggies were that big in the past!

The hike is dog-friendly, even though the sign didn’t imply that. Dogs must be leashed! When we entered the trail, a little kid was in a dinosaur suit taking pictures. Rad kid. Beautiful, velvety desert flowers. It was a perfect hiking day. Gorgeous views at the peak. My “are we there yet?” face. Mom kept picking up rocks she liked. Weird. The Apatasaurus or Brontosaurus memorial sign. I really wanted to explore inside this cave where the big doggosaur was found. Dad said no, so I hiked away in a huff. Nevertheless, it was a lovely hiking adventure.

Rating for Dinosaur Hill Trail:

I’ve awarded Dinosaur Hill two paws up because it was a super informative and fun trail for dogs and their people. There are some cool fossil discoveries and lots of learning for history buffs. The hike is only a mile, but it has a pretty steep grade at times, so be prepared for a little leg burner. This is another desert hike, so be sure to bring plenty of water and a treat for your pup. It’s easy to get dehydrated on desert hikes. Sunblock is also important, even if it’s a cooler day. I highly recommend this hike to pups at an intermediate skill level. I hope you enjoyed our hike with the doggosaurs; stay tuned for our next dog-friendly adventure.
