One of my favorite dog-friendly places to hike and explore in Oregon is the Painted Hills. The Painted Hills are located about 3 hours southeast of Portland in the desert near Mitchell, Oregon. Known to be one of the seven wonders of Oregon, the best way to describe this area is magical, deserted, and wild. An easy trail to explore with your pup is the Painted Cove Nature Trail.

Rating for Painted Hills:

I would give this area four paws up if I could because we have the best time exploring desert hikes. Although it’s hard to see in the pictures, the hills are vivid reds, greens, and lavender, which makes for a fantastic, eye-opening hike with your pup. I highly recommend packing lots of water and sunscreen since it’s dry, as well as a lunch to enjoy a picnic at the viewpoints. Since the area is desert land, be careful to keep your pup with you at all times to avoid them stepping in any cacti or worse… We actually heard a rattlesnake on this trail! This was a brief trip so it shall be a short and sweet post for me.
Me and Mom took our first solo girls trip to the Columbia River Gorge, and did an enjoyable mini hike up to see Latourell Falls. This 2.4 mile loop hike is the closest gorge hike to Portland, and it is easy for pups, kids, and families to enjoy.

A glimpse of the sun through the trees. Mom tried making me pose on this rock. I finally posed so we could hike on. Halfway up the hike we diverged off the trail for a fresh waterfall treat. We finally spot the lovely falls. The beautiful Latourell Falls.

I gave this hike two paws up because it was easy and fun for anyone to enjoy. There are many unique areas to stop, rejuvenate, and have a relaxing picnic lunch which we will definitely take advantage of next time we go with Dad. The trail is rated easy and your dog should be leashed throughout the trail. I recommend assessing your pup’s health before the hike, making sure to bring plenty of water, and staying close to your pup throughout the trail in case any stinky critters visit you.

Did you know I don’t like camping?

Over the years, I’ve brought up how much camping terrifies me. All the sounds and smells are a lot for a pup to handle. Plus sleeping on the ground is not as cozy as a hotel bed. I can, however, get behind a warm and cozy glampsite. Mom recently found a beautiful yurt in Springfield, Oregon.

We also did an amazing snow hike in Mount Hood National Forest called the Pioneer Bridle Trail. We had tried this hike before, but it was even more magical in the snow. I found out I love to eat lots of snow to stay hydrated on our adventures.

Are you surprised? I rate a lot of my adventures two paws up because I love most of the places we go. We only have a couple of one paw up ratings, and I don’t believe I’ve ever rated anything no paws up. Both of these adventures were so magical, I had to give them a top dog rating. An adorable alpaca

On our latest trip through Utah, we used HipCamp to book an incredible stay at Starry Hollow Ranch in Rush Valley. We weren’t sure what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised with the property, the sweet owners, and the cutest family of rescue animals. The property had endless land for doggies to run around and explore!

Our campsite

The drive into the ranch was breathtaking, and we were stunned by the 360-degree mountain views. We set up camp in the woods at the back of the property, and we went to visit the beautiful animals. I have to admit, they were taken aback to see a bulldog.

The alpacas’ facial expressions were hilarious They look like they’re in a band They all backed up swiftly when they saw me

I guess it’s safe to say the alpacas weren’t going to get close enough to play, so I moved on to check out the goats and chickens.

The luxury chickens The chicken coop was stylish Actually, all the animals were living in style The goats were also not very interested in me I was pretty jealous when I found out they wanted to hang with my mom and dad This llama and horse are besties

The owners of the ranch, Genny and Shayne, educated us on the rescue animals and gave us a fun tour of the property. They are working on expanding the ranch to include a large camping area, and they love hosting RVs, campers, and events on their property. We definitely plan to be back in the future. Rating for Starry Hollow Ranch:

We all enjoyed our stay at Starry Hollow, and we honestly can’t wait to go back. The owners had big hearts and had true passion for what they do. The campsite was comfortable and felt very quiet and remote, yet safe. There were incredible hikes around the area. The best part was obviously the adorable animals, even though they didn’t want to play with me! However, I know how it feels to be a rescue, so I can understand why they’re scared. I highly recommend checking out this spot if you’re ever passing through Rush Valley, Utah, and I hope you enjoyed our story! Stay tuned for our next dog-friendly adventure.
